.INFO, the fifth most registered generic domain extension, was approved by ICANN in November 2000 with other new generic extensions such as .aero, .name and .biz. It’s one of the first new gTLDs and now has more than 4.9 million domain names.
The Story of .INFO
.INFO was very popular in the 2000s, reached 6.8 million registered domain names in 2010.
Afilias has the right to operate the .INFO extension since 2000. In 2001, the sunrise and landrush period ended with 300 thousand domain name registrations. On 1 October 2001 Afilias moved into real-time registration and tens of thousands of new domain names were registered on the first day.
.INFO reached one million registrations in November 2002. In 2004, Afilias announced that it will allow IDN registrations with German letters.
.INFO registry Afilias announced the .INFO awards program in 2006. With that program, Afilias awarded best .info websites with €18,000 prize. The program executed 5 times, the last one was in 2011.
As of April 2020, .INFO is the fifth most registered generic domain extension (gTLD) with more than 4.9 million domain names.

4 of the 10 most expensive .info domain names are currently being used. Others are parked, redirecting to other domains or not resolving at all.
NewYork.info is at the third and fourth place at the same time on the list. It was sold for $46,392 in 2006, then $70,000 in 2007. Apparently, the person who bought it in 2006 made more than $20,000 in less than a year.
Top Countries of .INFO Domain Extension
The United States has the most .info domain registrations as we see in other generic extensions such as .com, .net, and .org. Germany, Panama, and Canada are following the US with 465, 360, and 240 thousand domain names respectively.
Please note that Panama is in third place on the list because some of the Whois privacy services use addresses in Panama.

The most popular 10 keywords for .info domain names are today, online, behold, info, group, home, life, best, health, and ahead. More than 18 thousand .info domain names are registered with each keyword in the list.
The exact-match keyword of the extension info is the fourth most popular keyword on the list. The keywords group, home, life and online are common with the top 10 popular keywords of .com.
We excluded the stopwords such as the, end, of, my, for, in, by, to, on, etc.

Every single day thousands of domain names are dropping (being deleted) because their owners don’t renew them. These numbers are not the total registration count for each year. These numbers above show how many domain names still exist and registered in each year.

When .info first opened for registrations, all single and two-character domain names were reserved. In 2011, this rule changed and ICANN allowed Afilias to allocate them. There’s only 2 registered single-character .info domain names: 0.info and o.info, both are registered by overstock.com.
There are some registered two-character .info domain names too. vw.info, registered by Volkswagen, is one of them.

GoDaddy is the registrar tops the .info registrar list with more than 1.6 million registered .info domain names. Namecheap, IONOS, GMO, and Tucows are coming after it with 460, 205, 161, and 136 thousand domain names respectively.
How Many of .INFO Domain Names are Being Actively Used?
Not all registered domain names are being used actively. 2.3 million .info domain names have active websites with at least one page. The remaining 2.6 million domain names are not being used.

Internationalized .INFO Domain Names
Internationalized Domain Names (IDN), which was first introduced in 2000, allows anybody to register domain names with non-Latin alphabets characters.
There are 25 thousand internationalized .info domains; less than 1% of all IDNs and 0.5% of .INFO domain names.
The oldest .info IDN is reisebüro.info which was registered on 17 March 2004 and it means “travel agency” in German.
.INFO Domain Name Disputes
A domain dispute occurs when somebody claims the right to use a domain name.
According to DNDisputes.com, 3.2% of all domain dispute cases filled in WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) are .info domain names.
